Products
Our collection of Door Frames and Joinery is large and varied, it includes External Door Frames, Internal Door Frames and Frame Side Lights, lots of these frame, architrave, skirtings and pelmet products are bespoke, special order or made to measure - as such they cannot be cancelled or returned. We have tried whenever possible to be clear about the door frame sizes.
Many of our door frames are made to order, they can therefore be made to virtually any door frame size required, accurate measuring of the door frame sizes is essential in order to avoid unnecessary cutting being required when you fit the door frame. If you have any doubts on how to measure up and select external door frames or internal door frames, please look at our DIY advice section or contact us if you need further information.
Thruframe Interior Frame Lining Kits:
Our design, our sizes and our experience, this is what sets this range apart, site cutting of leg lengths and lintel width is required.
The thought process we have gone through is developing this product is based on what customers were asking for, if we don’t have it we can certainly manufacture it, internal door lining kits with very many more offerings than would be available using Howdens door linings.
Bespoke items are what to expect but please be aware we can’t accept these as returns.
We chose to make these timber door frames in heavier sections than our competitors use, they are simple beasts that are supplied cut to length and with enough material to allow for levelling on site.
Door Frame Sizes - How to Measure for a Door Frame:
As with any aspect of fitting a Door Frame it is important to plan properly and take inside sizes and outside sizes of the door frame, these should be the overall sizes and don't forget the breadth of the frame from inside to outside, at all times it is advisable to check whether a timber threshold or cill is required, this threshold or cill is the part of the door frame that sits below the door but above the stone or concrete step, however not all external door frames have these fitted, some doors simply have an aluminium threshold or wait for it.......nothing, the latter situation will undoubtedly lead to draughts and rain penetration, not ideal or necessary.
All external doors and frames can easily be replaced but the old carpenter’s adage of "Measure twice and cut once" has never been more advisable in this process of door frame measuring.
Always allow 5mm or more from each side and the top of the frame sizes for "fitting tolerances" to avoid the frame being so tight within the opening that it becomes impossible to square the frame properly.
Some Door Frame info........
A door frame's overall height is the size of the Door Frame from the furthest point on the left to the furthest point on the right and from the lowest point to the highest point.
The door frame's breadth is the dimension from the inside (of the house or room) to the outside, this varies greatly dependant on the year of construction, we can make virtually any size of Door Frame.
A Door Frame threshold is generally a flat piece of timber which is normally the same breadth as the Door Frame, from inside to outside and anything between 10mm and 25mm thick.
A Door Frame cill is normally thicker than the Door Frame threshold, the cill is anything from 25mm to 55mm thick and can be the same breadth, from inside to outside or allow it to project past the outer face of the Door Frame by anything from 20mm to 90mm, the reason for this projection is to help shed any water away from the Door Frame or to cover any concrete or brick step.
Please be aware that on all exterior door frames you must ensure the Door Frame cill or threshold will be thick enough to allow the door to open in without fouling the step. Some homes are built in such a way that the Door Frame cill sits lower than the interior floor level and also the Door Frame lintel can sit above the inside level of the plaster work. We normally fit a weather bar on top of any exterior door frame cill or threshold to help with draught proofing.
Handing of a door and frame - What is Handing?
All exterior door frames must be viewed from outside, you must therefore choose the correct "handing", e.g.; make sure you choose to have the hinges fitted on the correct side, the terms are "Viewed outside hinged left - Opening in" or "Viewed outside hinged right - Opening in" and with doors opening out you use the same terms BUT mention "Opens Out", the same care must be taken and applies so that glass apertures are on the correct side (left or right) of the frame where a frame has this requirement and always when viewed from outside, the chosen image/frame type will override any subsequent notes that you add to your order as far as the "handing" is concerned.
Any doubts ask for advice.
Upvc front doors and frames or Upvc rear doors and frames - Helpful diy tips!
Upvc front doors and frames need the same care in relation to handing, just be aware that upvc external doors are always supplied with their own upvc frame but may need some form of timber sub-frame that is then clad with upvc facings when the door / frame is fitted.
Interior door frames are slightly different from the exterior door frames in that they don't have cills but may have thresholds. The older the property the more likely it is that the door frames will not have a threshold.
Remember to take a total of 6mm from the door frame's width and height to give some fitting tolerances. It is not uncommon to have to make the door frames smaller to ensure they can fit; any resulting cavity can then be concealed with facings.
